“Only As High As We Reach Can We Grow”
Ngakonui Valley School came into being following the merger of Ngakonui School with its neighbour Taringamotu School six kilometres away at the beginning of 2000. The merger came about as a request from parents following a Ministry of Education driven E.D.I. on education in Taumarunui and the surrounding districts.
Ngakonui Valley School is situated 12 kilometres north east of Taumarunui in an idyllic rural setting. We are a G3 school with a roll fluctuating between 100 and 125 pupils. There are currently 6.6 teachers employed along with 4 support staff. Our staff are a blend of experience and enthusiasm and work hard to ensure that appropriate programmes are in place for the children in their care.
Our children come from a wide area with 80 of them commuting at their parent’s expense from town. We like to think that we have the ability to offer a variety of educational experiences for the children in our care. We are currently running an extension programme one morning a week for some of our younger pupils and are looking at extending that to have two groups operating in the near future. Some of our pupils also have dual enrolment with the Correspondence School for extension and some for extra support.
Sport is encouraged at our school and we have five school teams competing in Saturday Morning netball competitions and teams also in the local miniball competitions. Other children take part in soccer and hockey competitions. A large number of boys take part in the Saturday morning rugby competition. A large number of our children have been selected in various rugby, miniball and netball representative teams and this is a reflection on their ability and commitment to their sport.
We are fortunate to have strong parental support for all our activities and we have a very willing and helpful Board of Trustees.
